Driver of tractor-trailer sued for wrongful death

Even the most responsible drivers get in accidents caused by other motorists. The moment an accident happens, there are plenty of things that can run through your mind: Who do I call? Am I OK? How am I going to pay for this? If it's not your fault then you may have a lawsuit and even a possible chance for a lawsuit loan. But before you even think about that, there's a lot of things that you have to do immediately following the accident and even before an accident.

The best way to deal with an accident is being prepared. Have an emergency kit available in your car. This may include a set of cones, warning triangle or even emergency flares. It's also convenient to have a pen and card with any relevant medical information that you or your family may need.

Stay calm immediately following the accident. Take a deep breath and make sure you're alright. Check for injuries and call an ambulance if needed. If the accident is minor, move the cars to a safe place that's out of the way of traffic.

Next turn on the vehicles hazard lights and use whatever emergency equipment you may have – like flares. Call the police no matter how major or minor the accident is. Also, notify your insurance agent as soon as possible.

Below are some other tips you can follow:

- Exchange all information with the other driver. If the registration information is different from the driver, get the relationship.

- Be polite, don't escalate the situation.

- Don't leave the accident scene until everything is cleared to go.

- Make notes about the accident, including all the damages and possible witnesses.

- Don't sign any documents unless it's for the police or your own insurance agent.
